George Kwadwo Anane

Postdoctoral Fellow University of the Witwatersrand

George is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Urbanism and Built Environment Studies (CUBES) and the WITS-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab, School of Architecture and Planning, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He previously worked as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Sustainability Science at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, Ghana. He is an alumnus of the WITS-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Project, having obtained a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Witwatersrand (2018–2022). His academic qualifications also include an MSc. in Development Policy and Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and a BSc. in Tourism from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. George’s research trajectory focuses on urban informality and spatial justice, peri-urban transformation, urban politics, and land governance. His comparative studies on formal and traditional land use planning in peri-urban areas, with case studies in Kumasi and Sunyani, have yielded original research publications in journals such as Habitat International, Land Use Policy, and Cities. He also serves as a reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals, including Habitat International, Land Use Policy, and Urban Management. As part of his fellowship, George is conducting research on the informal economy in the Kelvin, Alexandra, and Frankenwald areas of Johannesburg. George’s professional experience extends beyond academia. He has held leadership roles, including Head of General Administration and Head of Academic and Students’ Affairs at UENR, where he contributed to institutional quality assurance, strategic planning, and process improvement in administrative processes. A DAAD alumnus of the UNILEAD and TRAINIQA programmes, George is committed to advancing urban planning research and governance in the Global South. He seeks to leverage his expertise to contribute to innovative and sustainable urban development solutions in Africa and beyond.
